Wapiti Duo — Biography

Geneviève Liboiron, violin

Geneviève Liboiron has held fellowships at the Orford Arts Centre, the Domaine Forget International Academy, and the Banff Centre for Arts in Canada, as well as at the Kayaleh Academy in Switzerland. She also won the OPUS Prize for best concert of 2012 in the “Current/Electroacoustic Music” category, for her participation in a performance of Fausto Romitelli’s “Professor Bad Trip” with Ensemble La Machine.

Pursuing her passion and curiosity for contemporary music, she joined Ensemble Paramirabo in 2012, with which she has performed concerts in six Canadian provinces, as well as in England, the United States and Mexico.

Alongside pianist Daniel Áñez, she forms the Wapiti Ensemble, a violin-and-piano duo devoted to the experimental and contemporary music of the Americas. The duo has given concerts in Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay. Wapiti has received two artistic residencies from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, in Mexico City and Bogotá.

In 2016, Geneviève joined the organizing team of the concert series “No Hay Banda,” together with percussionist Noam Bierstone and pianist Daniel Áñez, focusing on promoting concerts of experimental music and DIY instruments.

Also active as a freelancer, she has performed with the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM), the Bozzini Quartet, Ensemble Bradyworks, Productions SuperMusique, and the Ensemble of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ).

She has been a guest artist at several festivals, including the Laboratoire de Musique Contemporaine de Montréal in 2013, the Mise-En Festival in New York, the CCMC 2016 Contemporary Music Days in Bogotá, and the Eduardo Mata Festival in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Geneviève teaches violin and music theory at the Conservatoire de la Montérégie and at Collège Regina Assumpta. She graduated from the Université de Montréal with undergraduate and master’s degrees in violin performance, studying under Anne Robert and Laurence Kayaleh.

Daniel Áñez, pianist

Colombian pianist Daniel Áñez earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in piano performance at the Université de Montréal (Canada), where he studied with Paul Stewart and Lorraine Vaillancourt. His research project focused on the piano music of Latin American composers born in the 1940s. A passionate advocate for Latin American contemporary music, Daniel Áñez is a member of the contemporary music ensembles Ensemble Allogène, Wapiti, Paramirabo and Ciao Rhino in Montreal, and of Ensemble CG in Bogotá. Áñez also holds a diploma in Ondes Martenot from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, where he studied with Estelle Lemire.

In August 2010 he toured Uruguay and Argentina with composer Graciela Paraskevaídis, giving concerts to celebrate the composer’s seventieth anniversary. Before beginning his graduate studies in Canada, Daniel graduated with honors as a pianist from the Universidad de los Andes, where he studied with Ignacio Pacheco and Antonio Carbonell. He took first place in the III María Clara Cullell International Piano Competition in San José, Costa Rica (2004), and won an honorable mention at the X Piano Competition of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) in Bucaramanga (2005). Daniel has given solo and chamber music recitals in numerous cities across Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, England, Mexico and Uruguay, and his performances have been released on independent CDs and on the Tacuabé/Ayuí label of Uruguay.
