Joan Izquierdo was born in Barcelona in 1966. He studied recorder at the Conservatori de Barcelona and later at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. He currently teaches recorder at the Conservatori Municipal de Barcelona. His commitment to teaching and to spreading the instrument has led him to write articles and textbooks for teaching recorder in schools, alongside an intense schedule of master classes and lectures. As a performer, his work is broad and specialized; he is part of various chamber ensembles addressing styles and interests ranging from 14th- and 15th-century music (trío Subtilior, Virdung), to 16th-century polyphony (Sforzinda – a recorder quintet), to the performance of Baroque music (Othello Ensemble). But perhaps his most influential activity has been in contemporary music, where his persistence has relaunched the instrument in the eyes of composers, having premiered more than fifty newly created works for recorder. In this field he is part of the “quartet de bec Frullato,” a duo with percussionist Pilar Subirà, and maintains a tireless solo career, frequently accompanied by electronics.
