For the final concert of the year in the Negra40 2015 cycle at the Centro Cultural Victoria Ocampo, Turkish guitarist Serkan Yilmaz — one of the most important guitar musicians based in Argentina — will perform in the Microcine of the Centro Cultural Victoria Ocampo on Saturday, December 12, at 9:30 pm.

Yilmaz has just returned from a 13-concert tour of Japan and from performing at the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival.

On this occasion he will play an intimate concert in Mar del Plata, featuring his own compositions built from elements of jazz, classical, ethnic, contemporary, Latin American, and Turkish music — forming a highly personal and remarkable genre of his own.

Yilmaz achieves a broad sound of intricate melodic lines and striking percussive effects, at times stepping outside the guitar’s everyday use to give it a strikingly unconventional treatment. He is also, notably, an accomplished practitioner of the art of improvisation.

Serkan Yilmaz

A composer, guitarist, arranger, and a highly expressive, subtle performer of Turkish origin based in Argentina. At age 20 he had his first contact with a guitar, and just two years later he was invited to take part in several international music festivals in the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Ankara, Ordu, and Adana. In 2015 he toured as a soloist through Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, and Adana. In Latin America he has performed in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and several cities in Argentina.

Serkan has released four recordings in Argentina featuring his own works: “Paisajes de Infancia” (2008), “Descalzo” (2010), “Mago” (2013, with Horacio Cacoliris), and “Amalgama” (2015, with Hikaru Iwakawa). Beyond his solo career, he is also part of two groups. First, “Bosphorus Duo,” for which he composes all the music; with this duo he performed at the “Buenos Aires Jazz Festival 2014.” He also toured 10 cities in Japan in 2015 — 13 concerts — with quena player Hikaru Iwakawa, and performed at the “Buenos Aires Jazz Festival 2015.” He has shared the stage with major contemporary musicians in countless concerts. He currently lives in Buenos Aires, performing his music in concert and working as a teacher.
