The simple summons us, questions us, and brings us together at the 4th negra40 and Club del Dibujo Days. The simple? The plain, the easy? Only the first, we think: the plain has to do with what is barely elaborated, with a system of low interaction between its parts, with what — out of convenience, laziness, scarce resources, lack of time — is missing complexity, independent mutations, unexpected paths, change, future. The plain is only plain. It is learned quickly, used quickly, and just as quickly it ends and is discarded. The plain carries no double meanings, it engenders no new derivations. The plain, like purity, puts an end to life. The real needs chaos as its ontological nutrient in order to exist.

The easy is not simple. The easy, too, is only easy. A redundancy? No, an explanation. The easy is dangerous: it seems to walk along the shores of the simple, but barely brushes against it. The easy assimilates nothing. It gives and takes from us at once. Am I sick? I trust my pill. Am I sad? Same thing. The easy is a shortcut to nothing: it reveals to us an understanding, a satisfaction, perhaps a pleasure, that doesn’t survive a single day. The easy omits pain, sadness, boredom, hopelessness. The easy makes us believe that things are easy, but it discards the thousand abysses that the real reveals. The easy eliminates nuance; it is almost always dual, almost always cruel too.

But the simple is not like this, we believe. The simple, without being plain, without being easy, informs us of the Whole in the palm of a hand. Being simple does not, however, make the matter any less unfathomable. The simple is faithful to movement, to crossings, to unexpected paths. The simple is tragic: it shows what is. It is a friend of the real, because in simplicity the real finds its way to express its power directly. The rain knows this — a child understands it in an instant, though its causes trace back to the origin of energy itself. The simple is efficient, elegant, humble, serene. Within the simple, being pretentious is a problem, a dead weight. Everything simple flies, runs, walks, travels, goes, glides. And these lessons are known by the mountains, the birds, the suns and the constellations.

And so, how gladly we open this time to think about these things. We want to remember and reclaim the strength of the simple, which is the strength of Strength itself. The coming Days, then, will focus on everything we can say about the simple in sound, in architecture, and in drawing — simply.

Our purpose does not aim to verify anything. It does not aim to give answers to anything. Simply to express, through walking, another way of approaching two different forms of knowledge.
