* Martín Virgili ** World premiere

In 1961, John Cage wrote his four-voice lecture Where Are We Going? And What Are We Doing? Ancestral and still current, the title of that piece grounds this concert, which celebrates more than ten years of music between Guillermo Bocanegra and Martín Virgili.

Guillermo Bocanegra (1977)

A classically trained guitarist, his interests lie in performance, experimentation, and improvisation within contemporary music. He has given numerous concerts throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. Bocanegra has recorded several solo albums: “La otra guitarra” (2002), “La tradición se rompe” (2006), and “Círculo de tierra roja” (2010). He is a member of the guitar trio TripTripTrip and of Ensamble CG. With these groups he has taken part in numerous collective recordings, as both soloist and chamber musician, among them “Que cosa tan seria” (2014), “TripTripTrip” (2012), and “Música Onejitiva” (2011). Bocanegra has received awards such as “Itinerancias por Colombia” (2009) and the Colombian Residency (Mexico, 2010). He currently teaches in the Department of Arts at the Universidad Francisco José de Caldas, Colombia, where he serves as Director of the Self-Evaluation and Accreditation Committee and heads the Acoustic Guitar Department of the ASAB Faculty of Arts. Bocanegra holds a Master’s degree in composition and performance from the Center for Advanced Studies in Contemporary Music (CEAMC, Argentina, 2005) and a music degree with an emphasis in guitar from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia, 2002).

Martín Virgili (1976)

Composer, guitarist, teacher, and arts researcher (UBA). He has received grants from the Université de Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), the University of Helsinki, the National Endowment for the Arts of Argentina, the Telefónica Foundation of Argentina, and the CCEBA. He has been invited to give workshops on experimental music by the Academia Superior de Artes in Bogotá, the National Center for the Arts in Mexico, and Duke University in the USA, among other institutions. His works have been presented in South America, North America, and Europe, and premiered by distinguished ensembles and soloists such as CG (Colombia), Stéphane Pécas (Canada), Jacques Demierre and Vincent Barras (Switzerland), and Margarita Fernández (Argentina), among others. He directed the documentaries Desde las Montañas (on contemporary music in Bogotá) and Fluctuat Nec Mergitur (on contemporary art in Mar del Plata). He is a member of Ensamble Orquesta Negra (with Guillermo Bocanegra and Gastón Mazières) and of the duo Vita Nova (with Jorge Ihlenfeld), a founding partner of the negra40.com project, and director of the Orquesta Inestable of the Club del Dibujo. He currently lives and works in Mar del Plata and Buenos Aires.
