Kunsu Shim is a composer born in 1958 in South Korea, the son of remigrants from Japan. He studied composition at Yonsei University in Seoul; after arriving in Germany in 1985, he studied with Lachenmann and Nicolaus A. Huber. Around that time he met Gerhard Stäbler, who remains to this day his partner and collaborator; since 1992 the two have organized a great number of events in the Ruhr under the names Aktive Musik and EarPort. He has been a resident artist at Djerassi, Ragdale, and Schreyahn, and has lectured at the Universities of Folkwang, Dortmund, Sungkyunkwan, and Suwon. His music has been presented at the Ultima Festival, the Kore Festival, the Boreal Festival, the University of Toronto, and Columbia University, as well as in concerts and master classes across the United States, Greece, South Korea, England, Australia, Singapore, and many German cities.

Gerhard Stäbler was born in 1949 in southern Germany, and studied composition and organ in Detmold and Essen. From 2000 to 2010, Gerhard Stäbler founded the “EarPort” Center for Contemporary Music in Duisburg (Germany), together with Korean composer Kunsu Shim. Stäbler’s works have been performed all over the world. Notable recent premieres include musical theater and orchestral work “Albert E…,” Theater Ulm (Germany) in June 2014; “SIMON,” Norwegian National Opera, Oslo, in February 2015; “El Color,” Mainfrankentheater Würzburg (Germany) in April 2015; and ”…AUSREISSEN DAMIT / ES GRÜN BLEIBT…” for soprano, solo violin, percussionists, choirs, and orchestras, ACHT BRÜCKEN FESTIVAL, Cologne, in May 2015. Gerhard Stäbler currently devotes his time to writing chamber music and stage works, premiering in Estonia and Germany and during concert tours across North and South America, along with an orchestral concerto commissioned by the Mainfrankentheater Würzburg and the Kunststiftung NRW (Germany).

Nuntempe Ensamble is a guitar quartet formed in 2008 with the aim of bringing audiences an original and genuine proposition: current music written for four guitars.

An eclectic repertoire made up of dissimilar aesthetics, ranging from music rooted in popular tradition to the most avant-garde languages, with the guitar as the common thread throughout.

Since its beginnings the quartet has researched the current and original contemporary repertoire for the ensemble and its variants in solo, duo, and trio settings.

The quartet approaches the music of the 20th and 21st centuries from the standpoint of cultural diversity, musical pluralism, and its own conception of the instrument’s timbral, expressive, and technical possibilities.

Nuntempe is made up of guitarists Andrés Vaccarelli, Manuel Moreno, Ariel Elijovich, and Pablo Boltshauser.
