Program Notes
Diagonal Vigo is a musical and theatrical exploration of the creations, sensibilities, and everyday life of the Argentine experimental artist Edgardo A. Vigo (La Plata, 1928–1997). Our premise is that a sonic thinking was taking shape within his work, and that this thinking can be taken up and recomposed from a musical perspective.
The experimental attitude inscribed in Vigo’s work is rewarded not only with traces of new creative possibilities; it also allowed him to “look at” and “read” the world around him in an experimental way, and to detect — another reward — those artists fleeing toward the raw and the different. This describes a procedure, and also an aesthetic, that Vigo set in motion through his dual role as creator and editor. Indeed, the work of editing, selecting, and integrating the many voices he amplified, recreated, and retransmitted (in counterpoint with his own) promotes a singular way of composing: composing musically. Music, time’s ally, is best suited by nature to handle voices, simultaneities, and temporal edits. Its intertextual force draws above all on a seemingly irreconcilable material diversity that, along the shores of theatrical time, can settle into a second reality common to them all.
The concert is, then, a staging of the works and affections that Edgardo-Antonio Vigo published above all in the magazines Diagonal Cero and Hexágono ‘71. Composed of visual and phonic poems by artists he circulated through his publications — Mirella Bentivoglio, Omar Gancedo, Luis Pazos, and Carlos Ginzburg among them — along with pieces of his own authorship, Diagonal Vigo is a musical work born of necessity rather than decision. It is a piece that receives, by refraction, the work of an artist who, without being a musician, we believe in some way acted musically.
