Program notes

Diagonal Vigo is a performative exploration — musical and poetic — of the creations, sensibilities, and everyday world of Argentine experimental artist Edgardo-Antonio Vigo (La Plata, 1928 – 1997).

Our hypothesis is that a sonic thought is taking shape within his work, and that this thought can be taken up and recomposed through music and staging.

The experimental attitude inscribed in Vigo’s work rewards not only a generative force of new creative possibilities; it also allows him to “see” and “read” the world around him experimentally, and to spot — another reward — those artists fleeing toward the raw and the different. This describes a procedure, an aesthetic, that Vigo set in motion through his dual character as creator and editor. Indeed, the work of editing, selecting, and integrating the many voices he amplified, recreated, and retransmitted — in counterpoint with his own — recalls a singular way of composing: composing musically. Music, an ally of time, is what best knows how to treat voices, simultaneities, and temporal edits. Its intertextual force draws above all on a seemingly irreconcilable material diversity that, along the shores of stage time, can settle into a second reality common to all.

The concert is thus a staging of the works and affections of Edgardo-Antonio Vigo, published above all in the magazines Diagonal Cero and Hexágono ‘71. Made up of poems and music by artists he circulated in his publications, together with poems and conceptual works of his own authorship, Diagonal Vigo is a musical work out of necessity more than choice. It is a piece that receives, by refraction, the work of an artist who, without being a musician, we believe, in some way acted musically.
